Free Expression and the First Year College Orientation

This overview of first-year orientation materials, originally developed by the Bipartisan Policy Center, explores how various first-year programs have integrated open inquiry and free expression into their programming, both as an institutional value and as an interactive experience for new students.

From convocation speeches, orientation packets, explainer videos, dialogue across difference sessions, and extended first-year seminar programming, universities have found a variety of ways to embed the value of open inquiry into new student orientations. This list of resources can inspire a revitalization of first-year programming.
