Campus Free Expression: A New Roadmap for Faculty

This resource offers specific recommendations that faculty should adopt to uphold academic freedom and freedom of expression. The Roadmap series identifies four challenges that all leaders in higher education must face head-on to protect academic freedom and freedom of expression:

  1. Acknowledging the tension between free expression and inclusivity;
  2. Promoting viewpoint diversity among both students and faculty;
  3. Supporting policies that protect academic freedom and free expression;
  4. Making the skills and dispositions necessary for academic and civic discourse a central aim of the college experience.

The Roadmap then recommends specific priorities and actions that faculty can pursue to protect academic freedom and free expression on campus, including integrating academic freedom and viewpoint diversity into the curriculum, emphasizing free expression and academic freedom policies during faculty orientation, and partnering with student affairs administrators to promote a campus culture of free expression.
