Sunday Salon

Sunday Salons (5pm-8pm) include food/drink and revolve around selected readings that range in topic, focus, and viewpoints. In keeping with the general theme of HxA, most of our readings will consider divergent viewpoints on a particular topic.

Date: Sunday, March 1st

RSVP to Austin Council at adc@vt.edu for location and parking instructions.

Topic: Strategies on Teaching Constructive Disagreement & Dialogue

Readings: This will be more of a “bring something and share resources” discussion since there aren’t clear divergent viewpoints. However, I have compiled the below list of readings and resources as a starting point:

-Mowreader, A. (1 March, 2024). "Teaching Students to Disagree Respectfully.” Inside Higher Ed.

-Mehl, C. & Haidt, J. (30 November, 2022). "How to Defuse a Classroom Conflict: Make It More Complex.” The Chronicle of Higher Education.

-Kelderman, E. & Diep, F. (2 December, 2025). "Everyone’s Starting ‘Civil Dialogue’ Programs.” The Chronicle of Higher Education.

-Heterodox Academy Resources

-Constructive Dialogue Institute (CDI) Resources

-Unify America Resources

-Disagree Better Resources
