The John Locke Institute is recruiting Preceptors for its 2026 Summer Schools
The John Locke Institute is an independent academic institution dedicated to the pursuit of rigorous, open inquiry throughout academia. We believe that scholarship thrives where ideas can be challenged freely - and that academics at every stage of their career should be able to follow the argument wherever it leads, without fear of censorious admonition. We are now recruiting Preceptors for our 2026 Summer Schools in Oxford, Cambridge, Singapore, Princeton, Boston, and Washington, D.C.
The position is open to advanced undergraduate students, graduate students and early-career academics.
As a Preceptor, you would be a member of our Junior Faculty, and responsible for leading Socratic Precepts – small-group Socratic discussions that challenge and interrogate students' responses to the ideas introduced in lectures.
We welcome applications from candidates across the globe and place particular value on the diversity of perspective and experience that an international cohort of Preceptors brings to our programmes. Successful candidates are not only experts in their respective fields, but can engage with ideas under pressure, argue precisely, and hold students to a higher intellectual standard than they might otherwise set for themselves.
We are particularly looking for Preceptors with expertise in one or more of the following topics:
- Philosophy: formal symbolic logic, metaethics and epistemology;
- Politics: advanced game theory and public policy;
- Economics: mathematical microeconomics, macroeconomics and finance;
- Mathematics: applied mathematics, formal proof, probability and statistics;
- History: historiography and the interrogation of conflicting source documents;
- Law: jurisprudence, English Common Law, and comparative jurisdictions;
- Psychology: belief formation and systematic cognitive bias;
- International Relations: political relationships between nation-states, economic relationships across borders, and the legal and ethical considerations of globalisation.
Whilst we do not cover travel expenses, all accommodation and meals are provided throughout the programme. Our Preceptors also receive an honorarium, reflective of their academic and professional experience.
Honorarium (per day):
• Starting level: $120 / £90
• Master’s: $160 / £120
• Doctoral (1+ years): $180 / £135
• PhD: $240 / £180
Potential Preceptors should be able to commit to teaching for the duration of an entire summer school (one or two weeks, depending on which course).
Applicants must be over the age of 20. Full course dates and curricula are available on our website: www.johnlockeinstitute.com. We will review applications on a rolling basis.
